I watched the season finale of Mad Men last night. There is a very powerful scene where Peggy finally tells Pete that she had his baby and gave it up for adoption. The writing on this show is just …amazing. I can’t help wonder where and who this story line came from. Warning: Strong stuff!
I was particularly moved by Peggy’s line about how a piece of her is missing . So there isn’t a misunderstanding, Peggy’s comment about giving the baby up because “she wanted other things” refers to her initial belief that Pete didn’t love her. Talk about irony. Jeez! Interestingly, Pete sheds a tear which is amazing considering Pete’s character has spent the whole season going through the motions of life unable to work up any emotion (even for the death of his father). I have no idea where the story line is headed next season but I am 110% hooked!
So pour yourself a martini, light a cigarette and watch while Peggy and Pete wait for the train:

Such an incredible, devastating scene. The speech is superb on so many different levels and can be read many ways, all of them true.

Lots of adoption on TV lately. Last night HOUSE had a similar topic with Cudy wanting to adopt, finding a mother, etc. and the mother changed her mind. (I was literally standing up screaming and clapping in my living room). House was poking at Cudy for adopting using many of the arguments by family preservationists like myself. It was a good balanced episode that ended with mom keeping baby. I was glad. (Cuz I was gonna change the channel if it was all adoption goo but this time they showed a more balanced view)

Incredible scene, I wish that this series was showing in my country. Suz you are so right adoption seems to be popping up all over the place, I read a lot and the last two books that I read had adoption themes, they are Sepulcre by Kate Mosse and The Passions of Chelsea Kane by Barbara Delinsky.

Hi all,
I guess if you think about the hundreds of thousands of adoptions over the last 50 years, it doesn’t seem that odd to see this theme popping up in our daily lives.
I will check out the books…the second cake came out much better, Kim. I kept the first one wrapped on the counter and invited people to just rip of a hunk. Tasted great!

I think you should publish a recipe book with stories in between, especially mention the crimson faced woman on the page after the prize winning salad….
