I bought a Menorah yesterday. I have always wanted one. To me, they are symbolic of tradition. Traditions that date back long before me. Traditions that will continue long after I am dead and buried. Just a memory.
I have noticed that some Menorahs have seven candles and some have nine. I resolve to research the difference and find the following:
Q: Why do some menorahs have seven candlesticks and some have nine?
A: The 7-candle menorah represents the lampstand in the wilderness tabernacle and the Jerusalem Temple. Every synagogue has such a menorah. The 9-candle menorah (also called a hanukkiah) is special for Hanukkah, and represents the legend of the miraculous provision of oil for eight days. During the eight-day annual holiday, one candle is lit each day. The 9th candle, called the shamus, is used to light the others.
Traditon also explains my obsession with classical music. When I listen to a piece of music written hundreds of years before I was born, it gives me perspective. Events in my life just seem less important and maybe even insignificant in the grand timeline.
The lady at the store told me I was a little late buying a Menorah for Hanukkah. I told her I was getting ready for next year.
